EAR RECONSTRUCTION (MICROTIA)
1.Ear Reconstruction (Microtia):
Ear Reconstruction is performed on patients incase of absence of one or both of the ears by birth or by trauma leading to loss of ear framework. It is a common congenital problem and prevalent in Asia as compare to the rest of the world having an incidence of 1 in 4000.As a parent, the most important thing to do is – not to panic. . Consult an ear reconstructive (microtia) surgeon who will guide you with one of the following management plans.
1.Autologus (own rib cartilage)
2.Medpor
3.Osseointegrated Implants
The first one (autologous) is the most common ear reconstructive procedure performed throughout the world second one is the Medpor implant,and the last one is osseointegrated implants.
1.Autologus ear reconstruction:
This procedure is divided into two stages with the interval of 4- 6 months.Age should be 10 years for the start of the first stage, which consists of carving of patients own rib cartilage into the shape of an ear and burying this under the skin envelope of the absent ear or the ear which has been lost.In the second stage the space behind the new ear is reconstructed.
2.Medpor:
This is a new method of ear reconstruction in which biomaterial (porous polyethylene implants) is used.
This is a single stage surgery and can be done at the age of 3 years but we prefer to delay before the child start to go to school.The Medpor implant is used which is already manufactured in the shape of the ear and placed under the vascularized tissue taken from the scalp and covered with the skin graft.
3.Osseointegrated Implants :
Osseointegrated implants are custom made rarely used and require frequent changes as the child grows up.
